Soda drinks, for many years of our lives, have always kept us feeling satisfied with the sweet taste we get from each gulp.
Usually, when soft drinks are being processed, they are subjected to carbonation. Carbonation, in this case, is simply the process of adding carbon dioxide to the liquid which later dissolves. Its sweet taste is due to the added carbonated water, artificial sweeteners, and flavours. In other words, carbonation is the state of having carbon dioxide gas dissolved in a liquid, causing the fizz of soda drinks.
In short, the sweet taste of soda drink is due to an acid; carbonic acid. This acid is formed when water mixes with a molecule of carbon dioxide, leading to a reaction which produces an aqueous solution of carbonic acid.
What Causes The Fizz In Soda Drinks?
Fizz in soda drinks is caused by the presence of carbon dioxide in the drink itself. Carbon dioxide cannot be added to the soda drink because of its low pressure which is normal. So for CO2 to be dissolved, it is subjected to a higher pressure, and then forced into the container or bottle of the soda. When the container of the soda stays sealed, it maintains a uniform pressure within the molecules of the liquid. But as soon as the bottle is uncapped, the air pressure changes for both the outside and inside of the bottle, leaving the gas molecules with enough space to escape spontaneously.
Why Does The Fizz Of Soda Drink Become Stronger When You Shake The Bottle Or Container?
Yeah, this happens most of the time, and how fantastic it feels to see a stronger fizz has always been better. No doubt you must have noticed how loud the fizz of a soda drink becomes when it is shaken rapidly.
Since the molecules of the liquid all attain a uniform pressure, the surface tension of the liquid holds them together. But when we shake the bottle of a soda drink, energy is created for the molecules being held by the liquid. So, a gas molecule breaks free and forms a bubble. When you keep shaking the bottle, more gases escape, letting for the formation of more bubbles which then fuse together, and once the bottle is opened, a great fizz occurs.
