Can You Tell What Someone Is Saying Without Really Hearing Them?

Next time you watch television, lower the sound and just watch the picture. What are the people saying? You may not be able to tell, but there are some people who can.
Lip readers are people who have practiced watching the movements of other people's mouths. They learn what is being said by seeing only. Deaf people need to do this and can be taught.
It is possible for a lip reader to tell what is being said by people on the opposite side of the room. If a lip reader had binoculars, he or she could watch people talking a great distance away  and know all about their conversation.
Also, lip readers can tell if a silent film is run backwards. If you saw a silent film running in reverse, you would have to rely on other clues such as a clock, or moving to tell that something was wrong.
