Are The Gas Giants Really Just Gas?

Gas Giants. Gas, a state of matter that is neither solid nor liquid, eh?
Giant, something really big, or abnormally big I guess; is what most people imagine at the sight of the word 'Gas Giant' The planets, ranging from the rocky worlds to the gas giants, have revolved a single star for billions of years, which hasn't turned out to be much of a marathon for them.

Jupiter, which has been considered to be part of the gas giants, has only lived up to being called one without breaking much of a sweat. But are these planets really just gas? Let's consider one of them, Jupiter. Jupiter Jupiter, the 5th planet from our star, is entirely made up of just gas. For centuries, humans have wondered if this planet contained mainly gas, but the fact is, it does. Some of which seem to range from hydrogen, to ammonia, to water vapour, to methane and to helium. Jupiter composes of 90% hydrogen and 10% helium, although, traces of other gases can be found along its surface. The hydrogen and helium which appear to be present are from the remains of the nebula, which was present during the formation of the sun. They then got attracted towards Jupiter. Smaller planets like Earth and Mars could not do the same due to their small masses.

Scientists say Jupiter's constitution resembles a star, only that it is not massive enough and it does not possess the density needed to carry out the function of a star. If a spaceship tried landing on the surface of the gas giant, it would simply pass through its layers and stratum of gases, and down towards the core of the planet. The core of Jupiter is still heavily debated as regards its state of matter.

Some suggest it to be made up of hydrogen, but the conditions are so extreme that the hydrogen converts to liquid. And deeper into the core, it may assume a metallic form which has a temperature of about 35,000°C. One of the amazing suggestion is the existence of a solid rock that is 14-18 times more massive than our Earth, to be the core of Jupiter. Stay tuned...
