What Happens To Us When We Feel Cold?
You must have noticed how bumpy the skin on your arms and legs becomes when you are cold. Tiny little lumps appear to pop out. We call these tiny bumps Goosebumps, or Goose pimples for some people. Most times, they pop out without any thought on your part; due to our body trying to make its hairs stand straight out from the skin.
Why Do We Get Goosebumps?
Sometimes we get goosebumps when we are irritated, but most times, due to intense cold, these goosebumps engulf out skin. Imagine you are cold, the only thing on that cold mind of yours is a warm environment, you wouldn't miss it for the world. To achieve this, the hairs on our body have no other option but to stand out and trap a layer of air around your body to help keep you warm. Our ancestors were much hairy than than we are, and they adopted this process when trying get to warm themselves. Today, we lack the hair, but we still get these bumps.
What Part Of The Body Controls Goosebumps?
The Nervous system is a major factor that deals with the control of all the organs of the body. Wider than you could ever imagine, the Nervous system can be grouped into two; the Central nervous system and the Peripheral nervous system. Under the Central nervous system, we have got the Brain and the Spinal cord. Far from these, the Peripheral nervous system can be grouped into two; the Sensory and the Motor. The motor can be divided into the Somatic system and Autonomic system.
Goosebumps can be classified to be controlled by the Autonomic system, which can be sub-divided into the Sympathetic system and the Parasympathetic system;which perform opposite actions. The Autonomic system is primarily concerned with controlling the body's involuntary actions and activities.
Goosebumps being under the Autonomic system, as the name implies, automatically pops out the Goosebumps on our skin. This is an involuntary action that specifically deals with the generation of heat all over the entire body. Although, research has proven that quite a number of humans can control Goosebumps at will, enhancing the body not just in the heat aspect alone, but in a few other conditions.
